Production of aluminium sheet
Rolling starts from preheated ingots weighing over 20 tons. As mill size increases, so do these ingots, but a typical ingot is about 6 feet wide, 20 feet long, and over 2 feet thick. The ingots are first heated to rolling temperature and fed into a disintegration mill, where they are rolled back and forth until the thickness is reduced to just a few inches. The slab can then be cold rolled or heat treated to increase its strength. The highest strength alloys are heat treated and rapidly cooled to room temperature, then drawn to straighten and relieve internal stresses created during rolling and heat treating. They are naturally aged at room temperature or artificially aged in a furnace to develop the desired combination of strength and corrosion resistance. Finally, trim the board to its final size. Plates produced in this way can be used in full thickness, but are often machined into a variety of simple to complex shapes.
From Sheet to Sheet and Foil
The production of sheet or foil is generally the same as sheet, but the slab is further rolled through a continuous rolling mill to reduce thickness and wound into coils at the end of the line. These coils are then cold rolled one or more times on a cold rolling mill. The coil can be heated in a furnace to soften it for further cold rolling or to develop the desired mechanical properties. Cold rolling is the final step for some sheets, but other types (called heat treatable) undergo further high temperature processing to increase their strength.
Some sheet and foil products can also be produced using a continuous casting process in which molten metal enters a casting machine to produce hot rolled coil, bypassing the ingot casting and hot rolling steps.

Sheets are used in heavy duty applications such as those in aerospace, military and transportation product manufacturing. Machined-formed aluminum sheets form the outer skins of jets and spacecraft fuel tanks. It is used in storage tanks in many industries, in part because some aluminum alloys become stronger at ultra-low temperatures. This property is especially useful when maintaining low temperature (extremely low temperature) materials. Sheets are also used to make structural profiles for railcars and ships, as well as armor for military vehicles.
