Several Basic Methods of Metal Machining

2021-02-04

There are several basic methods of metal machining. First of all, machining needs to be drilled. There are many types of machine tools and different sizes. The types of modern machine tools are almost unlimited. Some machine tools are so small that they can be installed on the workbench, and some machine tools are too big to be built in a special workshop.

Some machine tools are quite simple, while some machine tools are very complex in construction and operation. Regardless of whether the machine tool is large or small, simple or complex, it can be divided into several categories.

These categories are the basic methods of machining metal. Drilling is the process of drilling holes in solid metal. Use a rotary drill bit called a twist drill. The machine tool used for drilling is called a drilling machine. There are also various models and specifications of drilling machines. In addition to drilling, the drilling machine can also perform other processing.

Turning and boring, ordinary machine tools are the most common machine tools used for turning workpieces. Turning is the process of removing metal from the workpiece. While the workpiece is rotating, the tool cuts into the workpiece or turns along the workpiece.

Boring is a processing method that enlarges or further processes holes that have been drilled or cast on a metal workpiece. Boring on a lathe is accomplished by turning the single-edged tool side-by-side toward the workpiece. Milling is the process of cutting metal with a rotating tool. This tool has multiple cutting edges, called a milling cutter.

Grinding is a machining method that uses a grinding wheel called a grinding wheel to cut off metal. Grinding finishes the workpiece. The processed workpiece has accurate dimensions and a smooth surface. When grinding a flat workpiece, the workpiece reciprocates under a rotating grinding wheel. Grinding technology is often used for the final finishing of hard-worked parts that have been heat-treated to achieve precise dimensions.
