Introduction

Bronze is a common metal alloy, typically made using mostly copper and some tin. Sometimes, other metals such as aluminum and nickel are added to create the ideal bronze alloy for a specific application.

Bronze is brittle, highly ductile, and non-magnetic. It is also electrically conductive and has excellent corrosion resistance, which is usually used for sculptures, medals, bearings, bushings, screws, electrical connectors and so on.

▁▁▁▁

Subtypes

Bronze C51000

C51000 is one of the most widely used phosphor bronzes, owing to its unique combination of properties. The alloy offers an optimised combination of engineering properties, such as high strength and ductility, excellent fatigue and spring characteristics coupled with good corrosion resistance.

Bronze C51900

C51900 Phosphor Bronze Alloys, which is a 6% tin bronze distinguished by a very good combination of strength and electrical conductivity. It is wear-resistant, has very good corrosion resistance and can be readily soldered. In addition, it is applied in the paper, pulp, textile and chemical industries, as well as in shipbuilding, mechanical engineering and process equipment manufacture.

Bronze C52100

C52100 possesses the best spring properties of all 500 series Phosphor Bronze. High hardness, high strength, coupled with good formability and resistance to fatigue make this alloy an excellent choice where the most severe forming and functional requirements must be met.

Surface Finish

Plating

Plating is a process where a conductive surface is covered with a thin layer of metal. It is commonly used to prevent corrosion, increase durability, alter surface friction, and improve appearance.

Polishing

Polishing is one finishing loose abrasive process, used to generate surfaces with very high tolerances in geometry, surface integrity, and roughness characteristics, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference.

Powder Coating

Powder coating forms a durable, wear resistant and corrosion resistant layer on the surface of parts. Powder coating can be used to apply colors to parts and is compatible with any metal.

Painting

Painting is commonly specified by engineers to enhance a part’s appearance and corrosion resistance. In addition, painting can have a protective effect on parts. For example, surface painting is an effective method to protect metal from oxidation and corrosion.

Surface Grinding

Surface grinding is a process that creates a precise, smooth flat-surface by moving a workpiece back and forth under an abrasive grinding wheel. They are commonly used when making machine tools, reference surfaces, jig plates, and optical platforms.

Laser Marking

Laser marking is a low-cost method of adding text, logos, and graphics to parts. Similar to engraving, but using a CO2 or fiber laser.

Design Recommendations

Bronze has a lower melting point than steel or iron and is more easily produced from it's constituent metals. Bronze is a better heat and electricity conductor than steel. Due to rarity, the cost of bronze is generally higher than that of iron-based alloys but lower than nickel-based alloys.

Due to versatile physical, mechanical, and chemical properties, bronze has a variety of uses, such as electric wires (due to its high electrical conductivity), bearing bronze (due to its low-friction), bronze bells and other musical instruments (due to its resonant quality), marine equipments and tools (due to its resistance to corrosion by seawater).
