Introduction

Brass is a metal alloy made from copper and zinc. Due to its low friction property, great machinability and attractive gold appearance, brass is often used to make products like knobs, bearings, sleeves, bushings, nuts and bolts, gears, valves, hinges, handles, bells, musical instruments, etc.

This alloy is non-magnetic, easy to cast, and usually doesn’t require surface finishing. It has a low coefficient of friction, low melting point, good malleability, and high corrosion resistance.

Subtypes

Brass C260

Brass C260 has good flaring and bending properties, drawability and suitable for plating. Applicable to heat exchanger, curtain rod, sanitary tube, flashlight shells, lamp fixtures, fasteners, locks, rivets, electrical components, mechanical fasteners and ammunition casings, etc.

Brass 260 is known by about a zillion different names, but the most common are yellow brass and cartridge brass, the second because it is generally used for shell casings. As a rule, it is only available in sheet, and is not very machinable, but is a great combination of formability and workability.

Brass C360

Brass C360 is a standard alloy consisting of copper and zinc which contains about 3% lead. Smaller amounts of lead gives Brass C360 the highest possible machinability rating of 100 and causes minimal wear on CNC machine tools. It is easily soldered or brazed and has good resistance to corrosion.

360 Brass has a wide range of applications, such as screw machine parts, couplings, bushings, connectors, fittings, nuts, bolts, valve stems and valve components, pump shafts, brackets, threaded inserts for molding and many more.

Surface Finish

Plating

Plating is a process where a conductive surface is covered with a thin layer of metal. It is commonly used to prevent corrosion, increase durability, alter surface friction, and improve appearance.

Polishing

Polishing is one finishing loose abrasive process, used to generate surfaces with very
high tolerances in geometry, surface integrity, and roughness characteristics, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference.

Powder Coating

Polishing is one finishing loose abrasive process, used to generate surfaces with very high tolerances in geometry, surface integrity, and roughness characteristics, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference.

Painting

Painting is commonly specified by engineers to enhance a part’s appearance and
corrosion resistance. In addition, painting can have a protective effect on parts. For example, surface painting is an effective method to protect metal from oxidation and corrosion.

Surface grinding

Surface grinding is a process that creates a precise, smooth flat-surface by
moving a workpiece back and forth under an abrasive grinding wheel. They are commonly used when making machine tools, reference surfaces, jig plates, and optical platforms.

Laser Marking

Laser marking is a low-cost method of adding text, logos, and graphics to parts.
Similar to engraving, but using a CO2 or fiber laser.

Design Recommendations

Because brass causes limited tool wear during the machining process and is relatively easy to mill, it can – depending on the application - unlock faster machining speeds. The material is also well suited to CNC machining because it is recyclable, meaning that scrap material can be transformed into raw material again.
