Introduction

 

Steel is a popular metal alloy consisting mostly of iron and some carbon. Other elements are sometimes added, such as manganese, chromium, vanadium, and tungsten.


Steel is thermally conductive, highly corrosion-resistant, ductile, and malleable. The combination of these characteristics has made it a ubiquitous material in the production of automobile parts, aircraft components, construction equipment, machine tooling, crankshafts, etc.

Subtypes

1008 Low Carbon Steel

1018 low carbon steel is featured with excellent weldability and formability. It can be easily welded without special precautions. However, 1008 needs to be painted or otherwise maintained to avoid quick oxidization and rusting. It is typically used in home appliances, furniture, and automotive applications.

1018 Low Carbon Steel

1018 low carbon steel, a common cold-rolled steel with good strength and ductility, has excellent surface finish and weldability. It is more machinable than lower carbon steel alloys and is often used for mounting plates, spacers, pins, rods, shafts, spindles, sprockets and fixtures. 1018 low carbon steel can be heat treated to achieve surface hardening.

4140 Alloy Steel

4140 alloy steel has high strength, high fatigue strength, toughness, torsional strength, and impact and abrasion resistance. It is more challenging to form and weld than some other alloy steels as it is tougher than most carbon steels.


4140 alloy steel is typically used in aerospace, oil, gas, automotive, agricultural, and defense industries, specifically gears, shafts, spindles, fixtures, and collars.

Plating

Plating is a process where a conductive surface is covered with a thin layer of metal. It is commonly used to prevent corrosion, increase durability, alter surface friction, and improve appearance.

Black Oxide

Black oxide is a low-cost finishing method for adding corrosion resistance, reducing reflection, and enhancing the appearance of parts. As a final step, an after-finish of oil, wax, or lacquer is applied for added corrosion resistance.

Polishing

Polishing is one finishing loose abrasive process, used to generate surfaces with very high tolerances in geometry, surface integrity, and roughness characteristics, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference.

Powder Coating

Powder coating forms a durable, wear resistant and corrosion resistant layer on the surface of parts. Powder coating can be used to apply colors to parts and is compatible with any metal.

Painting

Painting is commonly specified by engineers to enhance a part’s appearance and corrosion resistance. In addition, painting can have a protective effect on parts. For example, surface painting is an effective method to protect metal from oxidation and corrosion.

Surface Grinding

Surface grinding is a process that creates a precise, smooth flat-surface by moving a workpiece back and forth under an abrasive grinding wheel. They are commonly used when making machine tools, reference surfaces, jig plates, and optical platforms.

Laser Marking

Laser marking is a low-cost method of adding text, logos, and graphics to parts. Similar to engraving, but using a CO2 or fiber laser.

Design Recommendations

✔  Alloy steels integrate different alloying metals to achieve varying degrees of strength, hardness and wear resistance. This means that alloy steels have different properties in terms of machinability, weldability and even corrosion resistance.
