Introduction

Stainless Steel is a steel alloy which contains a minimum of 10% chromium. The additional
chromium provides a pristine surface finish and exceptional corrosion resistance not found in
carbon steels.

The material properties associated with stainless steel have made it a popular metal within a
broad range of industries, including construction, home appliances, automotive, aerospace and more.

▁▁▁▁

Subtypes

Stainless Steel 303

The main value of stainless steel 303 is its ease of machining, grinding, and polishing due to the presence of Sulphur in the alloy. However, this slightly does lower the corrosion resistance and toughness of the metal. But despite this, it remains a tough, austenitic stainless steel alloy.

Stainless steel 303 is typically used in aircraft applications, machine parts, pump and valve parts, architectural applications, nuts, and bolts.

Stainless Steel 304

As the most commonly used stainless steel alloy in the world, 304/304L stainless steel offers a great mix of strength and corrosion resistance without being overly specialized. It maintains excellent corrosion resistance in most situations outside of marine environments and keeps it‘s properties in high temperature situations.

Stainless steel 304/304L is typically used in aerospace, food and beverage industry, pressure containers, architectural designs and trim, cryogenic applications, and chemical processing equipment.

Stainless Steel 316

Stainless steel 316/316L is one of the more popular stainless alloys. It exhibits higher strength than 304 and most importantly, excellent corrosion resistance in marine environments. Additionally, the mechanical properties of 316 remain constant even down to cryogenic temperatures.

Stainless steel 316/316L is typically used in oil and petroleum equipment, aerospace, food processing, pulp and paper processing equipment, textiles, architectural, and marine equipment.

Surface Finish

Plating

Plating is a process where a conductive surface is covered with a thin layer of metal. It is commonly used to prevent corrosion, increase durability, alter surface friction, and improve appearance.

Abrasive Blasting

Abrasive blasting is a finishing process where a media is propelled at a high velocity against a part’s surface to smooth or roughen it, or to remove contaminants,
often in preparation for painting or another finishing process.

Polishing

Polishing is one finishing loose abrasive process, used to generate surfaces with very high tolerances in geometry, surface integrity, and roughness characteristics, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference.

Brushing

Brushing is used to deburr and remove surface defects from metal parts. Although
suitable for a handful of metals, brushing is most commonly applied to aluminum.

Powder Coating

Powder coating forms a durable, wear resistant and corrosion resistant layer on the surface of parts. Powder coating can be used to apply colors to parts and is compatible with any metal.

Painting

Painting is commonly specified by engineers to enhance a part’s appearance and corrosion resistance. In addition, painting can have a protective effect on parts. For example, surface painting is an effective method to protect metal from oxidation and corrosion.

Surface Grinding

Surface grinding is a process that creates a precise, smooth flat-surface by moving a workpiece back and forth under an abrasive grinding wheel. They are commonly used when making machine tools, reference surfaces, jig plates, and optical platforms.

Laser Marking

Laser marking is a low-cost method of adding text, logos, and graphics to parts. Similar to engraving, but using a CO2 or fiber laser.

Design Recommendations

✔  All stainless steels alloys are high in strength though they vary in terms of hardness, machinability and cost.

✔  304 stainless steel has a medium hardness, making it easier to cut, and generally has the lowest cost.

✔  303 stainless steel has good machinability and high hardness and often comes at a higher price point.
