Introduction

 

Copper is a naturally occurring, non-magnetic metal known for its unique brownish-red color. The majority of bronze and brass alloys are comprised of over 99.3% copper (Cu).


Copper is ductile, easily machined, and highly resistant to corrosion. It is also an excellent
conductor of heat and electricity.

Subtypes

101 Copper

101 copper, also known as OFE or OFHC copper, is made up of 99.99% copper. It is a commercially pure high conductivity grade of copper that has no oxygen, giving it excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. The lack of oxygen gives 101 immunity to hydrogen embrittlement at elevated temperatures. It is excellent for hot working, cold working, and forging. 101 can also be soldered, brazed, and welded easily. It's typically used in conductors and particle accelerators.

110 Copper

110 Copper, also known as ETP copper, is most commonly known for its sublime electrical and thermal conductivity and formability. Additionally, it has good corrosion resistance and excellent hot and cold workability. 110 Copper has a poor machinability rating, 20% when compared to C360 Brass at 100%.


110 Copper has a broad range of uses, including plumbing fittings, electrical components, wave guides, base plates, bus bars, heat exchanger components, blade and ring terminals, cables, power transmission components, etc.

Surface Finish

Plating

Plating is a process where a conductive surface is covered with a thin layer of metal. It is commonly used to prevent corrosion, increase durability, alter surface friction, and improve appearance.

Polishing

Polishing is one finishing loose abrasive process, used to generate surfaces with very high tolerances in geometry, surface integrity, and roughness characteristics, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference.

Powder Coating

Powder coating forms a durable, wear resistant and corrosion resistant layer on the surface of parts. Powder coating can be used to apply colors to parts and is compatible with any metal.

Painting

Painting is commonly specified by engineers to enhance a part’s appearance and corrosion resistance. In addition, painting can have a protective effect on parts. For example, surface painting is an effective method to protect metal from oxidation and corrosion.

Surface Grinding

Surface grinding is a process that creates a precise, smooth flat-surface by moving a workpiece back and forth under an abrasive grinding wheel. They are commonly used when making machine tools, reference surfaces, jig plates, and optical platforms.

Laser Marking

Laser marking is a low-cost method of adding text, logos, and graphics to parts. Similar to engraving, but using a CO2 or fiber laser.

Design Recommendations

✔  Copper is a reddish orange, soft metal that takes on a bright metallic luster. It is malleable, ductile, and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity - only silver has a higher electrical conductivity than copper. It is softer than zinc and can be polished to a bright finish.


✔  As a result of its excellent electrical conductivity, copper's most common use is in electrical equipment such as wiring and motors.
